Schoolhouse Rock Live! follows Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher who is jittery about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through such songs as "Just A Bill," "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly," and "Conjunction Junction.

A DSM Academy Director, Choreographer and Music Director teach the class. The program ends with performances at the Uptown Theater in Grand Prairie on Saturday April 30 at 12:45pm & 4pm. About the Show

  • Live band with such instruments as violin, mandolin, keys, percussion, trumpet, guitar and harmonica
  • Many speaking roles
  • Numerous solo & duet singing opportunities
  • Multiple high-energy production dance numbers
  • Ensemble piece tailored specifically for the class
  • Original along with period music from the 1880’s
  • Material from this class may be used at auditions for college and theatre companies.
  • Script challenges actors (and audience) to explore lives of meaning and purpose.

This is a reimagined musical production of Edgar Lee Masters’ SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY. The script depicts life as it once was in the fictional Midwestern town of Spoon River as told from the perspective of its deceased residents. Characters sing, dance and speak of love won and lost, opportunities missed, hidden shames, delightful memories and funny embarrassing moments. Every story is different and shatters the myths of small town American life. The Academy will be using selections from the script that are used in matches such as high school UIL competitions. Music is from 1840-1880 as well as original and will create a score of ballads, duets, production numbers and underscoring. Experience is not required but a willingness to be creatively challenged is.

Note from the Director
SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY offers one of the highest character-to-page ratios of any work in literature. This means each student will have the chance to create one or many roles. The character development and diversity found in this script is tremendous. The score has not been heard by the public as traditional songs are being rearranged and original music is being written for the DSM Academy students. The style of the piece is a painting in motion designed to offer a lush and exciting musical theatre experience. It is a celebration of love, heartbreak and joy that is thought-provoking and clever. In my opinion, if someone in your life is an artist of any type, they will enjoy watching or being involved in this production. I do not think it will disappoint. -Kevin Cook
