JUNE MUSICAL THEATRE CLASS DESCRIPTION-Selections from NEWSIES
Let the kids have a Broadway blast this June in a musical theatre class offered by Dallas Summer Musicals Academy of Performing Arts. In this program, students concentrate on Broadway style dance training along with acting and singing skills taught by multiple DSM Academy instructors. Selections from the score and script of NEWSIES are used to strengthen performance skills.
ABOUT THE SHOW
There are plenty of male and female roles in the musical NEWSIES based on the New York City newspaper sellers strike of 1899 when young sellers (young girls and boys) are exploited beyond reason. The sellers set out to enact change and meet the ruthlessness of big business. The score features the songs “Carrying the Banner”, “King of New York”, “The World Will Know” and “Seize the Day”. An end-of class performance of Selections from NEWSIES will be presented on the Dallas Central Christian Church stage, Sunday June 26th, 1pm. The presentation is open to the public and free, so invite the neighborhood! No theatrical experience is necessary to participate. Most costumes and props will be supplied by DSM Academy and some may be borrowed from home. This June let the kids learn skills that belong in the spotlight!

In the afternoon skills taught in the morning programs are applied to the script and score of GREASE. This is an intense program geared for the serious student. ABOUT THE SHOW
Here is Rydell High's senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding "Burger Palace Boys" and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking "Pink Ladies" in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head "greaser" Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their "Summer Nights" as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as "Greased Lightnin'", "It's Raining on Prom Night", "Alone at the Drive-In Movie" recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. An 8-year run on Broadway and two subsequent revivals place GREASE among the world's most popular musicals.
Performances of GREASE are Saturday July 30, 2016, 1 & 4pm at Dallas Children’s Theater in the Rosewood Center for Family Arts, 5938 Skillman St., Dallas, TX 75231. Each student receives 4 complimentary tickets to either the 1 or 4pm show. Additional tickets are a $10 each. There is a costume fee of $35. The mandatory technical rehearsals are Thursday, July 28th and Friday July 29th, 5:30-10pm at Dallas Children’s Theater. No theatrical experience is necessary to participate. Most costumes and props will be supplied by DSM Academy and some may be borrowed from home.
